In a state house press release broadcast on Friday, May 26, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the outgoing Vice-President of Nigeria , was announced Leader of the Commonwealth Observer Group, COG, for Sierra Leone. The group constituted by Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the group, will be observing the general elections in Sierra Leone taking place next month.
As the COG Chairman, Prof. Osinbajo will be the leader and spokesperson of the Group of distinguished experts chosen from around the globe, interfacing between the Commonwealth Group and the media, and the authorities of their host country, while additionally representing the Group at all official functions. Prof Osinbajo’s role will also see him presiding over meetings of the Group.
In a public statement released yesterday by the Secretary-General, Scotland had expressed her gratitude to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for accepting her invitation, to undertake the important work of deepening democracy across the Commonwealth nations not minding his busy schedule.
In response, Nigeria’s Vice President had welcomed the opportunity to lead the election observers in Sierra Leone come June 24.
