Tensions flared over the weekend after a group believed to be supporters of a separate Yoruba nation attempted to take over the Oyo State Government Secretariat. These events have raised concerns about potential disruptions in neighboring Osun State.
Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke reacted swiftly, directing a beefed-up security presence around key government buildings, including the state secretariat, governor’s mansion, and media headquarters. This precautionary measure aims to prevent similar incidents from happening in Osun.
Governor Adeleke emphasized the importance of national unity and ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s federal system. He believes a stronger federal system with more autonomy for states will address many underlying issues. He urged those advocating for a separate Yoruba nation to join the push for constitutional amendments that will empower states.

The Governor stressed that dialogue within the existing legal framework is the best path to solving Nigeria’s challenges. He pointed to ongoing constitutional changes that are already granting states more power.
In a statement, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the deployment of security forces and expressed solidarity with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. The statement also urged the Yoruba nation agitators to abandon their plans and focus on working towards a united Nigeria.
Governor Adeleke further called for support of President Tinubu as he leads the national reform efforts. He emphasized the importance of national unity and working together to build a better Nigeria.
