A tragic incident unfolded in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday, as a stampede broke out during a children’s carnival, leaving more than 30 children dead and many others injured. While the exact number of casualties is still unclear, this horrifying event at a private funfair held at Basorun Islamic High School has sent shock through the community.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the tragedy and revealed that the state government quickly mobilized a rapid response team. Victims were swiftly rushed to various hospitals around Ibadan, with the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, receiving praise for activating all available medical teams to assist at the scene.

Despite the prompt response, Oyelade clarified that the state government was not involved in the planning of the carnival, nor was the Ministry of Health asked to provide logistics for the event.

This detail raises questions, especially considering that such large-scale events involving children should ideally be more tightly regulated and coordinated.

In a statement, Oyelade stressed the importance of proper planning when organizing public events, particularly those that involve vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. He called for a careful review of how such events are managed in the future to prevent further tragedies. This tragic stampede is a reminder of the chaos that can unfold when proper safety protocols and event coordination are lacking.

As the state waits for a full report from the Commissioner of Police to determine the exact number of casualties, parents with missing children are advised to visit several hospitals across the city, including Patnas Hospital, Western Hospital, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital, and the University College Hospital, Ibadan, to check on the well-being of their children.

The Oyo State government has promised to support the families of the victims during this difficult time, offering their deepest condolences. However, as the details of the incident continue to unfold, the public’s concerns about event safety and proper coordination remain unresolved. This tragedy serves as an example of what can go wrong when event organizers fail to ensure the safety and well-being of attendees, particularly children who are supposed to be the heart of such celebrations.
