The Oyo State Government has officially commenced the disbursement of ₦4.8 billion in relief funds to victims of the Bodija explosion. This was revealed during a press conference held on Thursday by the Bodija Estate Residents’ Association (BERA), Dejo Oyelese Vigilante Group, and other stakeholders at the heart of the affected community in Ibadan.
The explosion, which took place on January 17, 2024, was linked to illegal mining activities and devastated 77 houses, claimed five lives, and left dozens injured. President of BERA, Muyiwa Bamgbose, called the relief payout a “long-awaited but critical step towards healing and rebuilding.”
Bodija Explosion Victims Receive Relief After Months of Pain
According to BERA, the state government’s relief committee, chaired by the Deputy Governor, approved the compensation following a technical and humanitarian review by agencies and professional bodies. A total of 318 buildings within the 500-metre blast radius were identified for support.
“Compensation will be given to bereaved families, 102 registered tenants, owners of 37 damaged vehicles, and affected homeowners,” Bamgbose said. He thanked Governor Seyi Makinde for keeping his word and for showing “compassionate leadership and unwavering commitment to justice.”
N4.8bn Compensation for Bodija Victims Not Enough, Community Says
While disbursement has begun and many beneficiaries have confirmed receipt, BERA noted that 17 properties fell outside the official 500-metre radius and were excluded. The community is now appealing to the governor to offer support to these households “in the spirit of equity and compassion.”
The group acknowledged the roles played by emergency responders such as NEMA, SEMA, UCH, DSS, and the Nigerian Red Cross. Donations worth ₦35.4 million were also received, with relief materials distributed since August 2024.
Bamgbose further announced the Smart Bodija Initiative—an urban development plan focused on restoration, security, and long-term sustainability.
“No amount of money can replace lives lost,” he said, “but Bodija will rise again.”
