On Tuesday, Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, was given an honorary doctorate by the University of Manchester. The award was in the recognition of his excellent performance in football and the local community.
The award ceremony took place in Whitworth Hall, where Chancellor Nazir Afzal handed the award to Guardiola.Guardiola, who is the manager of Manchester City and has won six Premier League titles in nine seasons, was also acknowledged for his philanthropic work with the Guardiola Sala Foundation.
Nevertheless, it was his acceptance speech that became the center of media attention since he aired his prompt concern over the Gaza war via that platform.”The situation in Gaza is so sad. It affects me from head to toe,” said Guardiola. “It is not about ideology… It is only about the love of life.”Speaking about the pain endured by children in the fight, he stated: “Possibly we may convince ourselves that this situation is beyond our concern. But be cautious. The next four- or five-year-old kids will be ours. I am sorry, but I see my kids, Maria, Marius and Valentina.”The conflict came about after the Hamas-led attack on Israel that happened on October 7, 2023.
The attack resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 people being taken hostage. Following that, Israel’s military action has caused over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, to be killed, according to Gaza health authorities.
