A Philadelphia judge has ordered Elon Musk and his group, America PAC, to go to court today because of a case filed by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.
The case is about stopping a $1 million giveaway by America PAC to voters in important states before the November 5 U.S. election. The people who work for the District Attorney say this giveaway is like an “illegal lottery” and is meant to get people in Pennsylvania to give away their personal information.
The court papers say that the giveaway will give $1 million each day to a voter who signs Musk’s online petition for free speech and gun rights. Some experts think this might break a federal law that stops people from paying to influence voter registration.
The Justice Department has warned America PAC about possible legal problems. The court meeting, which was supposed to be on Friday, has been moved to Thursday morning.
Neither Musk nor America PAC has replied to requests for comments about the case.
This lawsuit is happening during a very close election, where polls show a tight competition between Republican former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
