A Philippine boat and a Chinese ship collided near a contested reef in the latest escalation of territorial tensions in the South China Sea. The Philippines alleges that China engaged in provocative actions, including harassment, obstruction, and dangerous maneuvers. The incident follows a previous accusation by the Philippines, claiming that China used water cannons to impede three of its vessels. The disputed area, particularly the Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, has been a focal point of contention.
According to the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, a Chinese coast guard ship rammed one of two Philippine boats carrying supplies, causing significant damage. The Philippines also accuses China of using water cannon, resulting in severe engine damage. In response, the China Coast Guard contends that the Philippine boat deliberately collided with their vessel, ignoring multiple warnings.
Simultaneously, a convoy of civilian boats, intending to deliver Christmas presents and provisions to Filipino fishermen and troops in the South China Sea, had to abort their mission due to continuous shadowing by Chinese vessels.
This development comes on the heels of the Philippines’ earlier allegations of China’s use of water cannons to obstruct its vessels, actions denounced as “illegal and aggressive.” Beijing, however, maintains that it employed “control measures” against ships intruding into its waters.
