hristian Association of Nigeria, -CAN, Kaduna State Chapter, has accused politicians of being behind the plans to frustrate the new cash withdrawal limits and to make the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria less effective ahead of the 2023 general elections.
CAN noted that the move by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and detain the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was political.
Recall that Justice J.T. Tsoho of the Federal High Court on December 9, 2022, allegedly declined the DSS application to arrest Emefiele over allegations bordering on “acts of financing terrorism, fraudulent activities and economic crimes of national security dimension.”
But there have been several opinions that the attempt to arrest Emefiele might be a political move considering the fact of the redesigned naira banknotes and the cash withdrawals limit, limiting vote buying in the 2023 general elections.
But the Chairman of CAN, Kaduna State Chapter, Joseph Hayab, had in a statement, questioned how the new Central Bank cash withdrawal policy had suddenly become a tool for politicians to pick a fight with Emefiele.
Hayab had then accused the politicians of attempting to intimidate Emefiele in order to carry out voter buying during the 2023 elections, saying, “What are those against CBN’s new money policy hiding?”
