Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has alleged foul play in the outcome of the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), claiming that some individuals in the entertainment industry are being deliberately sidelined.
Taking to his Instagram page in a recent video, Portable reacted to the outcome of the Best Lead Actor category, where Ibrahim Chatta, nominated for his role in House of GAA, lost to Femi Adebayo, who starred in Seven Doors. Chioma Chukwuka, also from Seven Doors, clinched the Best Lead Actress award.
Portable expressed disappointment, insisting that Chatta’s performance was more deserving of the award. He said:
“My fans, there is a gang up in the Nigerian entertainment industry, even in Nollywood. They didn’t give Ibrahim Chatta an award at the 11th AMVCA despite his impeccable acting. That was how I was also snubbed by The Headies Awards.”
The singer, who has a history of criticizing award bodies, went further to question the integrity of some award processes in Nigeria, suggesting that monetary influence could play a role.
“We don’t need awards. We need food, we need money. We have money but we can’t use money to buy awards like some persons.”
Pledging support for the veteran actor, Portable encouraged him not to be discouraged.
“Ibrahim Chatta, if they don’t award you, God will reward you. My boss, you are my mentor. I love you.”
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Ibrahim Chatta has raised concerns over perceived bias in award nominations. In 2023, he also alleged that there was a deliberate attempt to exclude him from receiving AMVCA recognition.
