Portugal Edges Slovenia in Penalty Shootout to Reach Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals

Portugal scraped through to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 3-0 win in a penalty shootout against Slovenia, following a goalless draw over 120 minutes. The victory, albeit far from convincing, secured Portugal a place in the last eight where they will face France.

Slovenia, buoyed by their historic progression to the knockout stages, proved a tough nut to crack for Portugal. Despite dominating possession, Portugal struggled to break down Slovenia’s disciplined defense. Cristiano Ronaldo, desperate to end his goal drought, was repeatedly thwarted, including by a stunning save from Jan Oblak on a late penalty.

Slovenia’s best moments came through Benjamin Šeško, who forced a save from Diogo Costa and nearly capitalized on a late chance before extra time. Portugal’s closest attempts saw João Palhinha’s shot graze the post and Tchouaméni’s long-range effort saved by Oblak.

The deadlock continued into extra time, with both teams preparing for the inevitability of penalties. Portugal’s nerves held firm in the shootout, with Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, and João Félix all converting their penalties. Slovenia, on the other hand, faltered, missing their first three kicks.

Portugal’s victory sets up a tantalizing quarter-final against France, as they look to go further than their Round of 16 exit at the hands of Belgium in Euro 2020. Slovenia exits the tournament with heads held high, having made a remarkable debut in the knockout stages of a major competition.
