The government of Portugal has escalated its visa regulations enforcement measures on foreigners visiting the country, as revealed through a spot check by Polícia de Segurança Publica, which fined overstaying visitors.
In a bid to control the migrant population and restore sanity in the midst of skyrocketing figures, the government has enacted fresh rules that target those holidaymakers who go beyond the 90-day threshold allowed for a 180-day cycle of arrival.
There has been a 15% increase in the number of non-resident visitors to Portugal, as opposed to a mere 2% among residents, as confirmed by Caixa Bank Statistics for 2024 (Caixa Bank).
New regulations have stipulated that any visitors who overstay will receive fines ranging from €40 to €250, depending on how long they stay past their deadline. Higher fines are reserved for serious cases, particularly intentional or repeat offenses.
Regarding visa violations, authorities handed out 1,226 fines against foreigners between January and October in 2023. These specific ones amounted to 651 cases of persons staying beyond their legally permitted dates’ ends. Others included charges like entering without declaring and failure to renew residence permits.
Despite stricter regulations, Portugal remains a major tourist destination despite tougher visa regulations. The number of foreign tourist arrivals increased by 7.5% during the first six months of 2024 compared to a year earlier – this was the highest increase in any half-year period ever recorded.
