The Ahmad Lawan led 9th Senate has amended section 84 (8) electoral act of 2022 to allow statutory delegates to participate in political parties, congresses, and conventions.
The statutory delegates are all those elected and those occupying a political position. They are governors, presidents, vice presidents, lawmakers (Senate and House of rep), and local government chairmen amongst others.
This bill was sponsored by Ovie Omo-Agege, the Deputy Senate President who said that the statutory delegates not being allowed to vote was an unintended error and should be corrected before the parties have their primaries.
“The amended Electoral Act of 2022 that we passed this year had a deficiency that was never intended, and that deficiency will deny all statutory delegates in all political parties from participation in congresses and conventions.” He said.
He said the amendment was important to not allow anyone to lose their right to vote during political parties’ activities.
