Summary Of The Plot/Character Analysis
Aunty Bunmi- Sola Sobowole
The story begins with the character Aunty Bunmi, a single mother and widow, whose husband died 20 years ago. She is “The Best Thing After Party Jollof” aka “Enjoyment Minister”. She’s a very energetic person who’s always available for “Owambe” despite her age. She goes over and beyond her way to turn up for her friends whenever there’s an event as seen in the movie where she “spends 180k on asoebi”. But the twist with this character is that despite all these, Aunty Bunmi is Lonely. She battles with health issues (fibroid), she’s in debt and her only son who is aloof, never calls and doesn’t respond to her messages. Serious health complications force her to travel to Mumbai, India for a medical checkup and an unplanned surgery. This trip becomes pivotal, as her interactions and experiences there lead to profound changes in her life and the lives of those around her.
Yemi – Tobi Bakre
On the other hand is Yemi, aunty bunmi’s estranged son who struggles to make ends meet using his talent in dancing. He hopes that one day he can “japa” and make his life better and take care of his mom. Luck shines on him when he gets selected by an Indian agency to be a backup dancer for one of their projects.
He encountered issues along the way like being scammed by an agent and bullied by his colleague. His journey is marked by his struggle to reconcile his passion with familial expectations. Eventually, Yemi decides to continue his education while also pursuing his career, bridging the gap between his aspirations and his family’s values.
Olumide – Mofe Damijo Richard
Bunmi’s brother, Olumide, is an uptight, strict but wealthy businessman who has kept people at a distance due to a past heartbreak. He reconnects with his former love, Rekha, in India, who now suffers from Alzheimer’s and does not remember him. This encounter prompts Olumide to reassess his life, softening his outlook and reconnecting with his family, including his estranged sister and her son, Yemi.
Zainab and Siddharth- Rahama Sadau and Rajneesh Duggal
Zainab, the wife of Dr. Siddharth, who helps Bunmi with her medical needs, faces marital challenges. The series explores their relationship dynamics, especially regarding Zainab’s decision about having children. Siddharth’s unwavering support and their eventual decision to start a family highlight the themes of love and mutual respect.
Conclusion
The series concludes with Olumide marking his 60th birthday. Although Kabir is unable to attend, Bunmi, who has extended invitations to Siddharth and Zainab, reunites with Yemi. Mother and son mend their rift (Bunmi disapproved of Yemi’s choice not to pursue further studies, while Yemi saw her as unsupportive). Olumide apologizes to Zainab for not being supportive when she first moved to India. Yemi, now his uncle’s successor, agrees to enroll in college while also following his entertainment aspirations. Zainab, who opted against the abortion, reveals her pregnancy.
Cinematic Evaluation
The movie was very interesting, with the excellent choice of characters, the suspense, and the infusion of two cultures.
But the movie had some unresolved plots. Did yemi get into a relationship with aarti? Why didn’t zainab want children? And why did she visit the abortion clinic? We needed deep explanations to be able to clearly understand her. Also, we hoped to see Olumide find love after all he had passed through and after letting go.
Overall, the movie was a solid 7/10.
