The Nigerian Police has paraded two soldiers in Yobe state, for the murder of prominent Islamic cleric Sheik Goni Aisami who died last week. Sheik Goni had been traveling to Gashua town from Kano State on Friday where he was found dead in a bush with his vehicle not far away from the scene.
The Spokesman for the Yobe Police Command Mr. Dungus Abdulkarim had revealed how one of the two arrested soldiers had asked the late sheik for a ride in a statement. The other soldier had been arrested on the grounds of being an accomplice to the murder of the cleric who had since been buried according to Islamic teachings.
According to the police, the main culprit had masterminded the stealing of the Sheik’s vehicle and had dressed in mufti clothes before leaving his stationed barracks while hiding his rifle gun at a checkpoint earlier that day.
It has been disclosed that the suspect had asked the Islamic cleric for a lift to Jaji Maji town.
According to Abdulkarim, shortly after picking up the suspect, the cleric had stopped the vehicle when the suspect had called his attention to an ‘unusual noise’ at the back of the car. Upon alighting to check the source of the alleged noise, the soldier had shot and killed the unsuspecting Sheik. After the murder, the suspect had dragged the sheik to a bush and had attempted to drive away but the car had refused to start.
This is where the other arrested soldier comes in as he had arrived at the crime scene in the company of an auto-mechanic to help start the car.
The attention of the police had been called when a farmer had seen the Sheik’s dead body and some suspicious individuals in a car. Police officials will be charging the culprits in court as soon as investigations have been concluded.
