Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on oil, Gaza, and Ukraine in a swift Gulf visit. Putin, seldom leaving Russia since the onset of the Ukraine war, had unclear intentions regarding specific discussions on oil or geopolitics with the crown prince, who leads the world’s largest crude exporter.
Following a decline in oil prices despite OPEC+ pledges, the meeting with MbS occurred during Putin’s initial stop in Abu Dhabi, where President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan warmly welcomed him. Putin acknowledged the unprecedentedly high-level relations with the UAE, emphasizing its role as Russia’s primary trading partner in the Arab world. He noted cooperation with the UAE within OPEC+.
Putin expressed gratitude for the crown prince’s invitation and mentioned changes to plans, initially expecting MbS to visit Moscow. Anticipating future meetings in Moscow, Putin stated, “Nothing can prevent the development of our friendly relations.”
The Russian defense ministry showcased Putin’s flight to the UAE, and his delegation, including top officials from various sectors, highlighted the significance of the discussions.
The trip, shortly after a delayed key OPEC+ meeting, seemed hastily arranged, with prior indications that MbS had plans to visit Moscow.
