Tennis great Rafael Nadal announced he will retire following next month’s Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, bringing to an end his illustrious 23-year career. The 38-year-old Spaniard, a 22-time Grand Slam champion and a record 14-time French Open winner, has been dogged by injuries in recent years, including hip surgery that has further restricted his already meager appearances this year.
His final competition will be for Spain in the Davis Cup, which will be from November 19-24. Looking back, Nadal said, “It has been complicated, above all these last two years. I’m excited to finish by representing my country in the Davis Cup, where one of my first big moments came back in 2004.”
Known as the “King of Clay,” Nadal stands at 112-4 at Roland Garros. The last of those titles came in 2022. Now, after an injury-filled season, he gears toward an emotional farewell.
“Quite a career, Rafa,” longtime rival Roger Federer posted. “Thanks for all the unforgettable memories.”
The happy tearful Nadal thanked his family, team, and supporters, adding, “I leave with the peace of mind knowing I gave my best.”
