Remo Stars have won the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title for the first time ever after a 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes in Ikenne on Sunday.
Lekan Adedayo scored the only goal in the 84th minute as the Sky Blue Stars moved to 68 points from 35 matches — 10 clear of second-placed Rivers United with three matches left. The win is also historic as Remo Stars join the ranks of 11 privately owned club to win the Nigerian top-flight league, first since Ocean Boys achieved the feat in 2006.
After the game, coach Daniel Ogunmodede confessed the pressure was immense. “We were nervous because we knew the stakes. The boys felt it too. But then, ultimately, they were great character,″ he said.
Remo Stars have thus ousted Enugu Rangers and also pick up a spot in next season’s CAF Champions League. Their remaining fixtures are against El Kanemi Warriors, Ikorodu City and Bayelsa United before the end of the season on May 25.
With this victory, the Ikenne-based boys write their own name in the annals of Nigerian football, joining the list of champions who have emerged in the last five decades.
