The remains of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Holdings Plc, have arrived in his Nigerian hometown alongside his wife, Chizoba, and son, Chizi. Their arrival comes after a tragic helicopter crash in California that claimed their lives on February 9th, 2024.

The news sent a wave of sadness across the nation. As a video circulated of their return journey, a somber reminder washed over us: death is inevitable. This somber truth underscores the importance of living life to the fullest.

Mr. Wigwe wasn’t alone in the accident. Former Nigerian Exchange Group Chairman, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, and two crew members also perished in the crash.

Funeral services for the Wigwe family began earlier this week. Today, their bodies reached their final resting place in Omueke, Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area. A wake will be held tonight, followed by their burial tomorrow.

Outpouring of Tributes

The past week has been filled with an outpouring of grief and support. Family, friends, and colleagues from around the world have come together to honor Mr. Wigwe’s memory. From the initial ceremonies in Lagos to today’s arrival, the journey has been marked by tributes and reflections on his remarkable life and achievements.

World leaders turutled (a Nigerian term meaning “also joined in”) in expressing their condolences. French President Emmanuel Macron, represented by his Foreign Trade Minister, called Mr. Wigwe a “great friend” of France, praising his dedication to cultural and economic partnerships. Former US President Bill Clinton admired Mr. Wigwe’s commitment to youth development and humanitarian efforts.

Closer to home, President Bola Tinubu described the accident as a “shocking” tragedy, while Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered a eulogy reflecting on Mr. Wigwe’s life cut short. He said Mr. Wigwe departed “before the season of bloom.”

We may not know how to feel entirely, but one thing is certain: Herbert Wigwe will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
