Norway’s royal family finds itself caught in a storm of controversy as Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, faces mounting allegations of sexual misconduct. The 27-year-old, born from a relationship before Mette-Marit married Crown Prince Haakon, was arrested on Monday over a rape accusation. And as if one charge wasn’t enough, the police have now uncovered a second allegation of rape, painting a very bad picture for a family accustomed to public admiration.
The police claim the latest case involves sexual intercourse without consent, with the victim allegedly unable to resist. Speaking at a detention hearing, police lawyer Andreas Kruszewski stated that investigators are pushing for Høiby to remain in custody while they continue their inquiries. As part of the investigation, items were seized from his home, raising more questions than answers.
This isn’t Høiby’s first instance with the law. On August 4, he was accused of bodily harm after a heated argument at a woman’s apartment in Oslo. Disturbing reports indicate that police found a knife lodged in the wall of her bedroom. To make matters worse, Høiby violated a restraining order in September, leading to another arrest. His most recent detention occurred while he was in a car with the alleged victim from the August altercation.
Raised by Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon alongside his step-siblings, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, Høiby has always been somewhat of an outsider to the royal duties. Unlike his step-siblings, who carry official public roles, he has remained a private citizen. Yet his actions brings him into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
The Norwegian royal family, typically a symbol of dignity and national pride, now faces an unprecedented scandal. While Mette-Marit’s maternal devotion to her son is understandable, the implications of these allegations cast a shadow over the monarchy’s reputation. The public now habors distrust for the family’s polished image, may now question the values they represent.
The knives in the walls of Oslo apartments, the restraining order violations, and the alleged rape charges are far from the fairy tale narratives often associated with royal families. We all know that privilege does not grant immunity from the consequences of one’s actions. Let’s see how this goes.
