Indians are celebrating after the Telugu action film RRR won a Golden Globe, a first for the country.
Naatu Naatu, the film’s memorable musical piece, was named the best original song,
beating off heavyweights like Taylor Swift and Rihanna.
Accepting the award, composer MM Keeravani expressed his delight at the song’s
global popularity.
Several Indians expressed their delight at the news back home.
Oscar-winning soundtrack composer AR Rahman termed the film’s win a “paradigm
shift” as he congratulated the team on Twitter.
RRR, which stands for Rise, Roar, Revolt, is a historical fantasy written and directed by SS Rajamouli that tells the rollicking story of two revolutionaries who fight against British rule in India, with superstars Ram Charan and Jr. NTR playing the lead roles.
The glittering action epic, one of India’s most expensive films ever, has been a big box-office hit not only in India but also in nations such as the United States. Last week, actress Jessica Chastain tweeted that she felt like she was at a “party” while viewing the film.
When it was released in May 2022, a Hindi-language version of the film on Netflix was among the Top 10 most-watched titles in the US for weeks.
Fans have also praised the film’s music, which ranges from romantic ballads to joyous dance songs and patriotic anthems.
Naatu Naatu, a three-minute stomper with Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has many dancing to its tune. Their energetic dance moves have also sparked viral trends on social media, not just in India, but around the world.
