Russia has strongly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to build a missile defense system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome, warning that it could turn space into a battlefield. The proposal, which revives elements of the controversial Reagan-era “Star Wars” program, aims to counter ballistic and hypersonic missile threats. But Moscow isn’t buying the “defensive” narrative.
A New Space Arms Race?
In an executive order, Trump called for an “Iron Dome for America” to protect against advanced missile threats. Russia, however, sees this as a blatant attempt to militarize space. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova did not hold back, stating, “We regard this as yet another confirmation of the US intent to turn space into an arena of armed confrontation and to deploy weapons there.”
She further argued that the plan aims to undermine Russian and Chinese strategic deterrence, likening it to Reagan’s infamous “Star Wars” initiative, which she described as “odious.” Washington, on the other hand, insists that the system is purely defensive, designed to protect against potential threats from adversaries.
Trump’s Iron Dome vs. Real Missile Threats
Trump’s plan references Israel’s Iron Dome, a system that successfully intercepts short-range rockets. But here’s the problem, U.S. adversaries, including Russia and China, possess far more advanced long-range missiles, including hypersonic weapons. Even experts question whether an Iron Dome-style system would be effective against threats like Russia’s “Oreshnik” hypersonic missile, which reportedly travels at ten times the speed of sound.
Simply put, this isn’t about stopping crude, short-range rockets, it’s about countering sophisticated intercontinental weapons. That’s a much bigger challenge, one that a space-based missile shield might not solve.
Escalating Tensions, Not Reducing Them
Zakharova warned that these U.S. policies “will not contribute to reducing tensions.” Instead, they could spark an arms race in space, pushing global powers closer to confrontation. Russia’s reaction signals that Trump’s missile shield could escalate military tensions rather than ensure security.
