RwandAir, the national carrier of Rwanda, is gearing up for a significant shift as negotiations with Qatar Airways near completion. According to a recent Financial Times report and statements by RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo, Qatar Airways is poised to acquire a major stake in the Rwandan airline as early as next month.

What They Are Saying

This potential deal has been brewing for nearly five years, with discussions between the two airlines outlining a possible 49% ownership transfer from RwandAir to Qatar Airways. The specific financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed.

“We’ve been in talks for a while now, almost five years,” Makolo told the Financial Times. “We’re truly at the final stages of the process.”

While Qatar Airways declined to comment on the ongoing discussions, RwandAir has yet to respond to official requests for confirmation. This news comes on the heels of an earlier announcement by Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer, who hinted at an upcoming investment in a southern African airline.

Why It Matters

This potential partnership holds significant implications for both airlines. RwandAir could benefit from Qatar Airways’ extensive network and resources, potentially expanding its reach and global connectivity. Qatar Airways, on the other hand, would solidify its presence in Africa, a continent it has identified for strategic growth.

Furthermore, Qatar Airways’ existing stake in the new $1.3 billion Bugesera International Airport under construction in Rwanda further strengthens the ties between the two entities. Additionally, code-sharing agreements already exist between Qatar Airways and several African airlines, including RwandAir.

Bottom Line.

The potential acquisition is a significant development for the Rwandan aviation industry. With the finalization of the deal expected soon, the coming months will reveal the specific details and long-term impact of this strategic partnership.
