Mohamed Salah scored twice in the second half to give Liverpool an exciting 3-2 win over Southampton and stretch its lead atop the Premier League table to eight points.
Liverpool had begun brightly, the early strike from Dominik Szoboszlai setting them on course, but the bottom-placed visitors turned this clash on its head through Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes’ strikes. Trailing 2-1, Salah rescued the Reds with an assured equalizer before converting a late penalty to seal their 10th victory in 12 league matches.
The brace means Salah now has 12 goals in all competitions this season, with six coming in his last five league outings. Reflecting on the result, Salah said: “It’s important we won, especially after being 2-1 down. We managed to come back, and that’s what matters.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot hailed his side’s intensity in the second half but admitted the first 60 minutes were lacking in urgency: “We dominated but didn’t attack the box enough early on. In the second half, we had the intensity and urgency needed to win,” he said.
With Manchester City slumping to their fifth successive defeat, Liverpool will be presented with an opportunity to increase their advantage further when they welcome Guardiola’s side at Anfield on December 1.
