The US Supreme Court had on Friday, in its latest legal ruling concerning gun rights, approved a federal law barring domestic abusers from possessing a firearm.
This is the first gun case to be ruled in court since a major decision issued in 2022 slackened gun restrictions.
In the 2022 decision, the Supreme court declared it would authorize only “reasonable” exceptions to the Second Amendment right to bear arms, saying it would rely on historical standards when it regards regulating firearms.
What They’re Saying
Chief Justice John Roberts had written in the 8-1 opinion:
“When an individual has been found by a court to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of another, that individual may be temporarily disarmed consistent with the second amendment.”“Since the founding, the nation’s firearm laws have included regulations to stop individuals who threaten physical harm to others from misusing firearms. As applied to the facts of this case, (the law) fits comfortably within this tradition,” Roberts had added, citing minors, individuals with mental illness, felons and drug addicts as among those prohibited from possessing firearms.
Last year, about 100 gun control activists, including the popular actress, Julianne Moore, had carried signs that read “Disarm Domestic Abusers”, staging a sort of peaceful demonstration outside the Supreme Court.
