The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This decision came after she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that sparked controversy within the legislative chamber.
Her suspension, announced on Thursday, March 2025, was based on allegations that she violated the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended) by bringing the presiding officer and the Nigerian Senate to public disgrace.
Senate Upholds Six-Month Suspension Despite Opposition
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct investigated Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims and recommended disciplinary action. When the matter was brought to the floor, some senators argued for a shorter three-month suspension, but the majority voted to uphold the full six-month ban.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, reading out the committee’s findings, stated:
“That the Senate do suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months for her total violation of the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended) for bringing the presiding officer and the entire Nigerian Senate to public opprobrium.”
This ruling has sparked public debate, as many Nigerians question whether the suspension is a retaliation for her accusations or a genuine enforcement of Senate rules.
Senator Natasha Can Return If She Apologizes
Despite the harsh penalty, the Senate has left room for reconsideration. Senator Natasha’s suspension could be lifted or reduced if she tenders a written apology. Akpabio made this clear while addressing the chamber:
“For the Senate to consider lifting this suspension or reducing the tenure of the suspension, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan shall submit a written apology to the Senate before her reconsideration by the Nigerian Senate.”
This condition raises critical questions about free speech within Nigeria’s legislative system. If an elected senator cannot express grievances without fear of suspension, does this set a dangerous precedent for silencing dissent?
Natasha Escorted Out, Declares ‘Injustice Will Not Stand’
Following the announcement of her suspension, the Sergeant-At-Arms escorted Senator Natasha out of the Senate chamber. However, before leaving, she made a bold declaration:
“This injustice will not be sustained.”
Her words suggest she does not accept the Senate’s decision quietly and may challenge the ruling in court or seek public support.
A Controversial Suspension: Retaliation or Justified?
Senator Natasha’s case has divided public opinion. Some Nigerians believe that her suspension is a direct attack on women speaking out against sexual harassment, while others believe the Senate followed its rules.
This case also raises concerns about legislative transparency. If a senator can be suspended for making serious allegations, how can corruption and abuse of power be exposed within Nigeria’s political system?
As the six-month suspension takes effect, all eyes will be on whether Senator Natasha will apologize or stand her ground. Will she fight back, or will she take the Senate’s offer and return to the chamber on their terms?
