SERAP Urges President Buhari to Reverse Electricity Tariff HikeSERAP Urges President Buhari to Reverse Electricity Tariff Hike
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the increase in the price of electricity tariff.
The organization had also urged President Buhari to ‘order the Minister of Power, Goddy Jedy-Agba, and the Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Professor James Momoh to quickly reverse the unlawful, unjust and unreasonable increase in electricity tariff,’ which was reportedly hiked in December 2022.
Following the alleged approval by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, electricity tariffs were increased by DisCos in Nigeria in December 2022 and several prepaid customers have purportedly confirmed the increase.
But, both the Minister of Power and NERC have refused to either confirm or deny the price increase.
In the letter signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, and dated Saturday, January 7, the organization said: “The increase in electricity tariff would further exacerbate the extreme poverty nationwide, and undermine the ability of millions of Nigerians to satisfy their basic human needs.”
SERAP had additionally noted that “the increase in electricity tariff did not follow due process.
“It is entirely inconsistent and incompatible with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 [as amended], the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, and the country’s international human rights obligations.” Oluwadare had stated.
