The Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State’s Ebubu has had a recent oil spill, according to Shell Petroleum Development Company.
The confirmation was provided in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Saturday night by Shell’s spokesman, Michael Adande.
Adande claimed that the incident happened at the state’s Ebubu and Oghale Manifold 12 pipeline owned by the corporation.
In a statement, Fineface Dumnamene, executive director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Center, urged industry stakeholders to look into the issue and determine what caused the spill.
The organization renewed its request that Shell and its joint venture partners replace the outdated Trans-Niger Delta pipeline in the Ogoni area because it is “overaged and now bursting and deflating like balloons and damaging the ecosystem.”
