Southwest Airlines is clarifying recent reports about changes to its extra-seat policy, after updating the policy in late May.
The airline previously allowed customers who needed additional space to either purchase an extra seat in advance and request a refund, or ask for a complimentary extra seat at the airport if one was available.
In January 2026, the airline updated its policy to require customers needing an extra seat to purchase one before traveling.
What the New Policy Means
FOX 17 News reached out to Southwest for a statement. The airline said the intention is to create a “more consistent and seamless travel experience” for customers who require additional seating.
“We will accommodate customers with a complimentary extra seat only if adjacent seats are available. Otherwise, the customer will be rebooked,” Southwest said.

The airline emphasized that customers are still strongly encouraged to reserve an extra seat before traveling to help ensure availability. The policy was updated following an extensive review.
