Sweden achieved a dominant run through the group stage before eliminating the two-time defending champion, the United States, via a penalty shootout after a goalless draw. In the quarterfinals, Sweden secured a 2-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Japan.
Spain experienced a setback by taking second place in its group after a heavy defeat against Japan. However, they rebounded with a strong performance, defeating Switzerland 5-1 and the Netherlands 2-1, earning their place in the semifinals.
