Sporting CP dominated Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League, downing them 4-1 as City suffered a third straight defeat while extending manager Rúben Amorim’s undefeated run in Europe. Phil Foden gave City an early four-minute lead, benefiting from a defensive mistake to net his third goal in as many UCL games.
Until Sporting turned it around. Viktor Gyökeres equalized just before half time, shrugging off City’s Jahmai Simpson-Posey and skewing a smart shot past Ederson. Immediately after the break Sporting took control, Maximiliano Araújo finishing clinically through Ederson’s legs, before Gyökeres converted a penalty after Joško Gvardiol fouled Francisco Trincão.
A missed penalty off the post by Erling Haaland further denied City their hopes of a turn-around. Haaland saw a late penalty hit the post before Gyökeres completed his brace with a second spot-kick, given from inside the box after Geny Catamo had been fouled by Matheus Nunes.
Sporting continued their great form, as they won 13 out of their last 14 games in the UCL and league, while City suffered their first away defeat in the Champions League since May 2022 and let in four goals in the competition for the first time since 2016.
