The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, (NASU), have promised to embark on an indefinite strike over their outstanding salaries.
This was contained in a statement duly signed by the SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi on Wednesday, September 18.
Both unions had given the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum to pay their outstanding salaries.
According to them, the 10-day grace period given to the Federal Government to pay the four months of outstanding salaries to university staff had expired on 26th July 2024.
There after, the unions gave the Federal Government another three-week ultimatum starting from Tuesday, September 17 to act on their demands or risk an indefinite strike by the unions.
They threatened to shut down universities and inter-university centres if payment was not made within the latest grace period.
Among other things, SSANU and NASU are demanding the payment of four months’ withheld salaries of their members, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government.
The unions had also accused the Federal Government of failing to act within the initial six weeks ultimatum it issued in July this year.
