A man, identified as Femi, plunged into Osun River in Osogbo, Osun State following his complaints about severe hardship. According to a source near the scene, Femi climbed onto Gbodofon bridge along Osogbo/Gbongan road at approximately 10:30 am and leaped into the river.
A nearby vulcanizer, who chose anonymity for security reasons, witnessed Femi descending from the Old Governor’s Office area of Osogbo/Gbongan road, pausing briefly on the bridge before taking the fatal plunge. The incident caused alarm among onlookers.
Confirming the emergency response, Ibrahim Adekunle, spokesperson for Osun State Fire Service, stated that their operatives were alerted to the incident and initiated rescue efforts immediately. Despite challenges due to high water levels, the victim’s body has not yet been recovered.
Kehinde Adeleke, Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, identified the victim as Femi, noting a prior attempted suicide by him earlier that day, which was thwarted by concerned individuals. Femi reportedly expressed despair over an assault incident earlier at a fast food joint in the OgoOluwa area, which contributed to his decision to end his life. The search for his body continues as of Saturday evening.
