Hundreds of Ugandan students are protesting outside the European Union parliament after it disapproved of a plan to build an oil pipeline with Tanzania’s neighbor.
The project poses a social and environmental danger, and EU legislators earlier this month endorsed a resolution alerting to those risks as well as to human rights violations.
The students are walking through Kampala, the nation’s capital, to hand the EU delegation a petition.
The kids are being escorted by police and the demonstration appears to be state-sponsored.
The pipeline will run 1,443 km (896 miles) from Lake Albert in western Uganda to the port of Tanga in Tanzania, which is located on the Indian Ocean.
