Sudan’s army chief’s special envoy, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir to discuss methods to stop the war in Khartoum.
The regional bloc, Igad, chose President Kiir to lead mediation efforts to stop the conflict between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
However, the warring sides’ choice to attend truce talks in Saudi Arabia has fueled speculation that the regional mediation effort has been neglected.
Dafalla al-Haj Ali attempted to address the matter at a news conference in South Sudan’s capital Juba, stating he wanted to announce “high and loud” that Igad was not being sidelined.
“We have full confidence in President Salva Kiir,” he said.
Mr. Kiir emphasized the importance of the conflict’s resolution and stated that no country should use it to hurt Sudan.
