Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen has announced the 24-man Super Eagles squad to represent Nigeria in their 2025 AFCON qualifying double-header against Libya. As Nigeria looks set to further solidify their position in Group D, key players include Captain William Troost-Ekong, in-form forwards Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and experienced winger Moses Simon.
The Super Eagles’ backline is expected to be made up of some familiar faces, with Olaoluwa Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi-of whom both can operate at wing-back. Three goalkeepers who have been selected are Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, who are joined in the squad by Amas Obasogie. Star Premier League players Oluwasemilogo Ajayi and Calvin Bassey are expected to bring strength to the middle of the defense.
In midfield, Nigeria is expected to trust in the expertise of Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, and Fulham’s Alex Iwobi. Undoubtedly, their creativity and experience are bound to play a huge role in sustaining dominance against a much resilient Libyan side.
The attack is stacked with in-form players for their clubs: Taiwo Awoniyi, Victor Boniface, and Samuel Chukwueze are expected to lead the line, with Boniface filling the gap left by injured Victor Osimhen. Chidera Ejuke’s return into the national fold after a two-year absence adds depth and creativeness to the attacking options.
The reigning African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, is ruled out of the upcoming qualifiers with an injury he suffered in action at Galatasaray. His absence is a big blow to the team; however, the form of Boniface and versatility of Lookman will give Eguavoen confidence heading into the fixtures.
First, the Super Eagles host Libya in Uyo at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Friday, October 11, and depart to Benghazi for the return match at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium on Tuesday, October 15. All players are invited to report to camp in Uyo by Monday, October 7, as Nigeria is seeking qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
