Super Eagles and Vitoria Guimaraes of Portugal midfielder, Mikel Ndubuisi Agu, hopes to be back in action by the end of September after suffering an unfortunate injury which has kept him out of action since April.

The all-action player has been on the treatment table since April 20th, 2021 when he featured for 10 minutes in the 1-0 loss to his former club FC Porto at the Estadio do Dragao.

He subsequently suffered a training ground injury which was a recurrence of an earlier injury which had shut him out for two months in November 2020. He returned to the pitch in February before he was forced off again.

In an exclusive interview with from his Portugal base, Agu bemoaned his fate at the setback and optimism that he will soon be back.

“I’ve been very unlucky with injuries. I came back last February and as I was trying to settle into the team I had another one which ended my season. I’ve been assured by the doctors that I will be fully recovered to start playing again in a month’s time. I cant wait to

get back on the pitch because this is the only job I have,” he said.

The 28-year old sealed a permanent move to Guimaraes after he had been farmed out on loan to Club Brugge (Belgium), Bursaspor ( Turkey) and Vitoria Setubal (Portugal) and he was an ever-growing starter in the side before the injury lay-off.

The constant injury-enforced absence also affected his national team career with the international friendly against Algeria last October when he came on for Frank Onyeka being his last appearance for the Super Eagles.

He said: “I want to play for my club and my country everytime. I pray I’m fit in time to be available for selection for the AFCON. It will be special because it will be my first time.”

Agu was limited to just 15 games in all competitions last term and is yet to play this season.
