The Super Falcons of Nigeria were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in the opening game of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Gabi Nunes scored the only goal in the first half to seal the win for the South Americans. All efforts by the Nigerian team, ably led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, had been put in, but they could not level.
Ajibade, who turned in a fine display with her dynamism and aggression, took to social media to reflect on the defeat. According to her post, she declared she had every reason to be thankful and proud despite the loss. “I give all the glory to God for being able to play and captain the team at the Olympics,” Ajibade wrote. “I’m so proud of the girls, but it wasn’t our day. We shall go back to work and make the country proud. Thank you for the support #RASH #TheGirlWithTheBlueHair #ThankYouLord.”
Ajibade’s message was powerful, for many fans joined her teammates in affirming her leadership and character in adversity. Now, the attention of the Super Falcons will be directed at their next task—against the reigning World Champions, Spain, this coming Sunday, July 28, 2024.
For Nigeria, the game against Spain would be a turnaround one to ensure that they make up for a strong result against one of the favourites going into the tournament. It’s going to be an exciting show as the Super Falcons get out to stamp their authority on the competition and do better in the competition.
It was a bold call from head coach Randy Waldrum to start with star striker Asisat Oshoala on the bench, as Chinwendu Ihezuo was named as the focal point in attack. It was always going to be task sans former Barcelona Femeni striker. Ajibade tried her best, with one brilliant run which set up Ihezuo, whose shot was superbly saved.
The Super Falcons will therefore have to regroup and strategize for their crucial match against Spain, which they really have to win if they hope to still keep an Olympic dream alive.
