Sudan, known for its determined stance in the ongoing conflict, has taken a drastic step by declaring 15 staff members from the United Arab Emirates embassy as persona non grata. This move, announced by the Sudanese state news agency on Sunday, demands the departure of the mentioned personnel within a strict 48-hour timeline.

The Decision Unveiled

In a summoned meeting at Sudan’s foreign ministry, the acting UAE Chargé d’affaires was notified of this unexpected decision. However, the agency has withheld further intricate details surrounding this development.

A History of Tensions

Tensions escalated following accusations made by a high-ranking Sudanese general, implicating the UAE in supplying the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a dominant paramilitary group engaged in conflict with Sudanese armed forces. In a dramatic narrative, the general alleged forceful abductions, further heightening the rift between the two entities.

Dueling Narratives

Responding to these allegations, a UAE official maintained their stance, emphasizing their consistent advocacy for de-escalation, ceasefire, and diplomatic negotiations since the conflict’s inception. However, the war, which commenced in mid-April, has caused widespread displacement, affecting over 6.5 million individuals and sparking ethnically driven violence in Darfur, attributed to the RSF and allied Arab militias.

The Denial and Ongoing Strife

Despite persistent allegations, the RSF has vehemently denied involvement in any ethnic cleansing activities within the Darfur region. Nevertheless, the conflict continues to cast a grim shadow over Sudan, perpetuating its distressing consequences.

This recent expulsion of UAE embassy staff serves as yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of Sudan’s determined pursuit in the face of conflict, revealing the complexities and controversies entwined within the tumultuous situation
