It’s no news that sustainability is such a big deal right now. This topic is all anyone seems to talk about and that’s for a good reason. Sustainability is about protecting the planet and making better choices that don’t harm the environment in the long run. There are different ways to get involved in sustainability and one of the many ways is through sustainable cooking. Sustainable cooking is about preparing food in ways that are eco-friendly like using locally grown ingredients, reducing waste, and making choices that help the planet instead of hurting it.

Prioritizing Local and Seasonal Produce

Sustainable cooking starts off with what’s on your plate, which means you have to pay close attention to where your food comes from. One way to do that is by prioritizing local and seasonal produce.

When you buy local food, you’re not just getting fresh ingredients but you’re also reducing the environmental impact of your meals. What does that mean, you may ask. Basically, local produce doesn’t have to travel thousands of miles to reach your table, which cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Seasonal food, on the other hand, grows naturally during certain times of the year, so it doesn’t require excessive artificial methods to produce.

How Do You Find These Products?

Finding local and seasonal produce is pretty simple, you can head over to a nearby farmers’ market to buy them. These markets often sell things like fruits, vegetables, and even dairy products straight from local farms.

Organic Products

Another step towards sustainable cooking is choosing organic and sustainably grown products. Conventional farming often uses synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and other unhealthy practices that degrade the soil and water. But organic products on the other hand, avoids using these chemicals and focus more on using natural methods to grow food. Sustainable farming takes it further by protecting the ecosystems, conserving water, and fair treatment for farmworkers.

Reduce Food Waste

Reducing food waste is a big part of sustainable cooking. When food goes to waste, so does all the energy, water, and resources that went into producing it.

When trying to reduce food waste, you can start with proper meal planning. Before you head to the store, make a list of what you actually need, based on the meals you plan to cook for the week. This way you don’t over buy, and end up with spoiled food.

Food Storage

Food storage also helps cut down on waste. For example, you can keep fruits and vegetables fresh when you store them in the right conditions. Not all vegetables do well in the fridge. Items like onions and potatoes are usually meant to stay in a cool, dark place.

Recently, people are adopting the use of clear containers and fancy labels to store their produce and food items. But while you adopt these storage methods, don’t forget to include the expiration dates, so you don’t forget to use them in time.

Leftovers

Gone are those days where leftovers are thrown away in the trash. People are getting creative these days, making new dishes from whatever food they have left.

Leftover rice can become fried rice, yesterday’s roasted veggies can be blended into a soup, and bread can be turned into breadcrumbs which you can use to coat your chicken or turkey before frying.

Embrace Plant Based Meals

Eating more plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and nuts is both healthy for us and a kind approach to the environment. Eating animal-based food requires a lot of land, water and energy to raise and grow the animals.

This can lead to tons of greenhouse gasses. But if our diet is shifted to a diet with more plants, we can help reduce deforestation, conserve water, and cut down on pollution.

Conclusion

Sustainable cooking is all about making choices that help the planet. Buying local and seasonal foods reduces pollution, organic foods protect the environment, and cutting food waste saves resources.

Adding more plant-based meals can also help fight pollution and deforestation. Small changes in the kitchen can make a big difference for the earth!
