In a move aimed at improving conditions for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Taraba State schools, the Taraba State Government has given its approval for a substantial increase in their allowances. This decision, as announced by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, Zainab Usman, is a step towards addressing the pressing educational situation in the region.
Here are the key changes:
Monthly Allowance Boost: NYSC members in Taraba State will receive an additional ten thousand naira on top of their regular monthly allowances.
Medical Allowance: A one-time payment of fifty thousand naira will be granted to each corps member as a medical allowance.
Accommodation Support: An accommodation allowance of twenty-five thousand naira per term will be provided, totaling seventy-five thousand naira for three terms.
Furthermore, the Taraba State Government aims to incentivize exceptional corps members who excel in their service at schools with automatic employment opportunities.
In addition to these financial improvements, the government is taking steps to enhance transparency in the enrollment and teaching processes. This includes the introduction of an ICT-based registration system for teachers and students, aimed at ensuring the efficient provision of essential school materials.
Looking ahead, the government plans to provide uniforms, shoes, socks, and books to students by January, supporting their pursuit of education. Additionally, the State Government will cover examination fees for all SS3 students, enabling them to take both WAEC and NECO examinations in the coming year. Exceptional students will also have opportunities for sponsorship and scholarships.
For adult learners seeking education, Mass Education Centers will be available to ensure accessibility for all. Schools operating at their maximum capacity in terms of facilities will temporarily implement a shifting system while additional buildings are constructed to accommodate the increasing demand.
This move by the Taraba State Government reflects a positive shift in recognizing the need to provide better support and incentives for youth corps members who contribute significantly to the education system, acknowledging that the previous allowances were insufficient.
