The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has pledged to fully restore power supply to the North-East region by May 27, 2024. This commitment follows the vandalism of four transmission towers along the Jos–Gombe 330 kilo volt (kV) transmission line, which disrupted electricity supply to Gombe, Damaturu, Maiduguri, Yola, Bauchi, and Jalingo.

Why it Matters

The intermittent power supply in the affected states has caused significant inconvenience for residents since the outage began last month. Insufficient power supply also threatens productivity and contributes to high production costs and the overall cost of living in the region.

What They Are Saying

The tower collapse severely impacted several cities in the North-East. TCN engineers swiftly mobilized to redistribute available bulk supply and commenced reconstruction of the vandalized towers. Progress is evident, with reconstruction efforts nearing completion on several towers along the Jos-Gombe axis.

According to TCN, construction work on the Jos–Gombe transmission line is expected to be completed and energized by May 20, 2024, with the Damaturu–Maiduguri axis set to be operational by May 27, 2024. This restoration effort aims to fully reinstate bulk power transmission along the affected 330kV transmission line by the specified deadline.

Currently, only 38MW of power is being supplied to both Jos and Yola Distribution companies, with efforts to extend power to Jalingo impeded by high voltage levels. TCN is committed to expediting construction work to ensure timely completion of the towers.

Bottom Line

The restoration of electricity supply in the affected areas is paramount for the well-being and productivity of residents. TCN’s efforts to expedite reconstruction and meet the specified deadline are crucial for restoring normalcy and facilitating economic activities in the region.
