Muyiwa Awoniyi, the manager of Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared insights into the early days of their professional relationship, revealing that Tems was not financially well-off when they first crossed paths.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Awoniyi recounted that Tems had only about ₦200 in her bank account at the time. Despite her limited finances, her determination and unique character impressed him enough to take a different approach to their partnership.

He recalled, “When she asked me to manage her, I initially intended to send over a standard management contract. But she was so eager to formalize things that she wanted me to sign my own part first — something I hadn’t experienced before.”

Recognizing her drive, Awoniyi decided against the usual management deal, opting instead to form a company together. “I thought, ‘This is someone I can work with for life,’” he explained.

Before working together, the two had been friends for about three months, during which Tems often stayed quiet while he and his cousin chatted on his podcast.

Awoniyi also noted Tems’ generosity despite her financial struggles. “She barely had any money but would still order food for us. She didn’t have an income source back then, so I knew she was different from everyone else I had met in Nigeria.”

His reflections highlight the artist’s early challenges and unwavering commitment that eventually contributed to her rise as a global music star.
