The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor has stated his desire to initiate proceedings against Ugandan rebel commander Joseph Kony.
This is the first time the prosecutor’s office has requested a hearing to confirm charges in the absence of a defendant.
A warrant for the arrest of the Lord’s Resistance Army leader was issued 17 years ago on 33 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
In the 1990s, the LRA launched a revolt in Uganda, killing, mutilating, and abducting civilians, particularly children.
Mr. Kony’s current location is unknown, however, the LRA has been active in Sudan and the Central African Republic.
