Tony Todd, the actor who terrified audiences as the title character in the film Candyman, has died aged 69 years old. The father of two died of natural causes at his Los Angeles home Wednesday night.
Todd had a prolific four-decade career in such horror hits as Final Destination and Night of the Living Dead, while also appearing in Transformers, The Crow, and Star Trek as Commander Kurn. He was an accomplished stage actor, too, starring on Broadway in the musical Aida.
But while he’d show up in countless films, it was as the iconic, hauntingly baritone-voiced Candyman back in 1992 that he became an icon of terror. Todd reprised the role in two sequels, returning to the franchise in 2021 for a reboot co-written by Jordan Peele.
Virginia Madsen, who co-starred alongside him in Candyman, shared a touching tribute of Todd as a “gentle soul” and “truly poetic man.” His manager Jeff Goldberg continued, “What an amazing man, and I will miss him every single day.”
Tony Todd’s work lives on in unforgettable parts that will never fade in the minds of horror fans across the world.
