The Tottenham Hotspur got rid of the 17-year trophy drought and also reclaimed their place in the UEFA Champions League after an intense 1-0 match over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final at San Mamés.
It was a make-or-break game for both teams. They were aware of that being the most important and only chance to make the end of the domestic season any more redeemable. The game was balanced quite some time till scoring in the 42nd minute from Pape Matar Sarr’s deep-lying delivery gave Tottenham a lead of 1:0.
The Spurs player Brennan Johnson was the first to arrive at the near post and the ball was deflected by Luke Shaw into his own net in the next moments of the play-off.
A bitty final yielded an unsightly goal, but it was essential. The Red Devils, who failed to score the first goal for the 31st time this season, created opportunities to hit back. Rasmus Højlund missed a header and Bruno Fernandes squandered a sitting opportunity by diving, however, Spurs goalie Guglielmo Vicario was only saved from harm by a great clearance from Micky van de Ven as the latter made his appearance on the pitch.
Alejandro Garnacho provided a great contribution being a substitute when he found himself in a goal-scoring situation which was immediately visited by Vicario who made a great save. However, the United players instead of providing an equalizer could not even manage such a simple thing.
The change in the score was an outcome of a 2nd occurrence of a trophy won by Postecoglou while the team is in his charge for his 100th match in the position. Hence, it was their 150th victory in European competition. In some sort of way Manchester United, the losing side, had their fourteeen-game undefeated record in Europa League extinguished and were out of the continental race making up for a forgettable time under Ruben Amorim.
It was a very exciting and memorable night for the Tottenham fans, who took part in a big celebration. The victory after a long dry spell was the starting point of a great journey to the Champions League. Thus, they came not only to see an interesting game but to enjoy the long-desired and deserved celebration too.
