Tottenham Hotspur has sued INEOS, a firm co-owned by the same person who owns Manchester United, over a sponsorship deal that was ended abruptly.
Spurs had entered into a five-year partnership with INEOS in 2022 whereby the INEOS Grenadier was to be the official 4×4 vehicle for Tottenham. But the pact was unilaterally terminated in December 2024—two years earlier than the agreed time—thus, the north London club was left with no other alternative but to lodge a claim at the London Commercial Court.
INEOS stated that they exercised their contractual right to opt-out of the agreement. “We have a contractual right to terminate our partnership contract and in December 2024 exercised that right,” a spokesperson told Sky Sports News. On the other hand, Tottenham is trying to prove to the court that INEOS is not telling the truth and the latter has no grounds to abandon the agreement.
This is definitely not the first time INEOS has come under fire from the public because of sponsorship that they ended in such a way. The company has also recently severed ties with the sailing team led by Sir Ben Ainslie and the New Zealand rugby team, which initially went to court before settling the case.
INEOS acknowledges that they are cutting back on sports sponsorships as part of their cost-cutting strategy which is evidently going on in the same direction with the tenure of Ratcliffe at Manchester United during which he has already been criticized for similar decisions.
