Veteran Nollywood actor and former Labour Party spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has openly accused Peter Obi of betrayal over Obi’s renewed support for the embattled Julius Abure-led faction of the party. Okonkwo, who parted ways with the Labour Party in February 2025, said Obi ignored warnings and aligned with a group he described as “undemocratic” and “agents of the government.”
In a trending interview with Symfoni, Okonkwo insisted that the betrayal came after he repeatedly advised Obi to stay away from the Abure-led group, which he believes has tarnished the Labour Party’s image. He said, “If there is anybody that betrayed the other, I can say it emphatically that Peter Obi betrayed me.”
Obi’s Endorsement of Abure Faction Triggered Fallout
Okonkwo disclosed that Obi was misled by party executives who claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had accepted the Abure faction. Despite Okonkwo’s advice to the contrary, Obi reportedly returned to endorse them publicly, an action Okonkwo strongly opposed.
“I told Obi that these people had become agents in the hands of the government to destabilise him,” he said. According to Okonkwo, Obi’s endorsement of Abure’s group contradicted the former presidential candidate’s public stance on transparency and internal democracy. “What they did was absolutely illegal and unconstitutional,” he stressed.
The Labour Party’s internal crisis has continued to damage its image, with members of the Abure-led group facing serious allegations of financial mismanagement and undemocratic conduct. Okonkwo stated that these issues were at the core of his decision to leave the party.
Kenneth Okonkwo’s Accusation of Betrayal Sparks Political Fallout
Kenneth Okonkwo’s accusation of betrayal has intensified the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party. He narrated how Obi’s action shocked his allies and caused deep disappointment among loyal supporters. “One of the leaders in that executive sent me the video to mock me,” Okonkwo revealed, describing how he was humiliated after Obi visited Abure’s office just days after their private conversations.
The former actor and legal practitioner emphasized that Obi’s belated attempt to appear neutral came only after INEC distanced itself from Abure. “He could not be neutral and something had to be done,” Okonkwo stated firmly.
