Nigerian actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has marked a major milestone with her 2025 film Oversabi Aunty, which has now surpassed N1 billion at the box office.

FilmOne, the movie’s distributor, confirmed on Monday that the film has earned N1,017,201,953 from cinemas across West Africa.

The achievement makes Oversabi Aunty the first Nollywood directorial debut to reach N1 billion and the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film in history.

The distributor also announced plans to expand screenings to select cinemas in the United States and Canada, alongside ongoing showings in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

“Can somebody say WORLD BEST for a REASON!! The real Bestie Jesu!! N1 BILLION+ at the box office,” FilmOne wrote in celebration. “First Nollywood directorial debut to hit N1 BILLION. 4th highest grossing Nollywood film of all time. West Africa, this is a full celebration!! OVERSABI AUNTY still showing in cinemas nationwide in select cinemas in UK and is coming to USA and Canada soon.”

Abraham took to Instagram to express her gratitude to God, her fans, and the entire production team, calling the milestone a “proud moment” in her career.

“Thank you God. Thank you Toyintitans, Nigerians, my cast, my crew, Filmone, everyone. I’m short of words,” she wrote. “Oversabi Aunty to the world and still showing in cinemas near you. My first directorial project. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Oversabi Aunty tells the story of Toun, a self-righteous church usher obsessed with correcting others, whose overzealous behaviour turns family life into a moral battleground. The story culminates in a chaotic wedding introduction that forces her to face the consequences of her actions.

Abraham’s record-breaking achievement comes shortly after fellow filmmaker Funke Akindele reached a similar milestone with her 2025 film Behind the Scenes, which also grossed over N1 billion.

Akindele has been steadily raising Nollywood’s box office standards. In 2023, her film Battle On Buka Street became the highest-grossing Nollywood movie with N640 million. She then broke the N1 billion barrier in January 2024 with A Tribe Called Judah, and later that year, Everybody Loves Jenifa set a regional record with N1.6 billion, making it the highest-grossing film in West Africa.
