U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin would be “stupid” if they fail to reach a deal to end the nearly four-year war in Ukraine. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump claimed both leaders are now in a position to make a meaningful agreement.

Trump Pushes for Immediate Talks

Trump said he was preparing to meet Zelenskiy in Switzerland, though details about the meeting remain unclear. He also said he had been in communication with Putin, whom he described as willing to negotiate.

Trump Says Zelenskiy and Putin Are Stupid if They Miss Deal

“I think I can say that we’re reasonably close,” Trump said, emphasizing that a deal is within reach but warning that both sides must act quickly or risk missing the opportunity.

Zelenskiy and Putin Must Act

The U.S. president was blunt about the stakes. He described the delay in reaching an agreement as partly due to “abnormal hatred” between the leaders. Trump pointed to Zelenskiy as the main obstacle in previous discussions, while suggesting that both leaders now have a chance to stop the war.

“And if they don’t, they’re stupid,” Trump added, underscoring his impatience with what he sees as unnecessary political friction.

Ceasefire Still Elusive

Trump’s comments come as Ukraine prepares to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24. While he expressed optimism about the progress of negotiations, experts caution that any deal would require careful planning and international oversight to avoid collapse.

The president framed the situation as urgent, arguing that continued fighting is unnecessary and that both leaders have the tools to make peace if they act decisively.

Controversial Diplomacy Style

Trump’s blunt statements and public criticism of world leaders reflect his unconventional approach to diplomacy, which often bypasses traditional channels. While some see it as a pressure tactic, others warn it could backfire by embarrassing leaders or complicating negotiations.

Regardless, Trump is clearly positioning himself as a key broker, insisting that the window to reach a ceasefire is closing quickly and that failure to act would be a serious misstep by both Zelenskiy and Putin.

Global Implications

If a deal is reached, it could bring a temporary end to the fighting and open the door to more stable peace talks. But Trump’s public pressure may also intensify scrutiny on both leaders, adding political weight to already fragile negotiations.

As Trump prepares to step into the role of mediator, we are all closely watching to see if his aggressive style can yield results, or if his warnings about Zelenskiy and Putin being “stupid” will be remembered as a failed attempt at brokering peace.
