The power supply was cut across Tunisia for about two hours on Wednesday, September 20 but the reason for the infrequent nationwide outage still remains unclear, as at the time of filing this report.
The state electricity company, STEG and residents had made this disclosure on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Interior ministry has confirmed that its Interior Minister had headed to the power plant located in Rades city to inquire on the reasons for the nationwide blackout said.
The state electricity company had attributed the outage to a “technical dysfunction” at the key power plant in Rades, a city located about 15km south-east of Tunis.
Residents had reported hearing a loud boom and seeing flames at the power plant.
Power is reportedly being restored gradually but some people have reported problems.
STEG has said that it was still working on stabilising its generators and distribution network.
Electrifity cuts are a rare occurrence in the country, where electricity coverage is at a 100 per cent, according to reports by the International Renewable Energy Agency.
However, it should be noted that the capital city, Tunis, was hit by a major power cut in 2014.
